What to do when you get stuck

What to do when you get stuck

Why can't I figure this out...

Were you putting together an idea and got stuck? Or probably you were solving a problem or deducing a better solution when all of a sudden everything wasn't clear anymore? We all get stuck at one point or another, usually when solving a problem or putting together an idea. What is this feeling of being stuck and what to do when that happens.

We get stuck for different reasons...

There can be different reasons for being stuck, it could be due to

  • stress or burnout
  • seeking perfection
  • indecision (you can make your mind up)
  • you're concerned about what others might think
  • you're comparing yourself to others

These are the major reasons why we feel stuck, yet whatever your reason may be, feeling stuck can be frustrating and demotivating.

What you should do differently

Talk about your situation

This cannot be underestimated, it's 9 times out of ten your best bet. When you talk about your situation, you get more clarity on your thoughts.

You don't have to have someone with you before you do this, it could even be a pet or a rubber ducky, the key is to explain what your situation.

Distract yourself

Next time you feel stuck, try to do something other than what you're currently doing. It helps to get your mind off that problem, therefore relieving you of the frustration. However, your brain will still keep processing the problem in the background, allowing you time and space to do other productive things.

Breathe...

This is another way to distract yourself from your thoughts. Take a break to just do nothing but breathe. This could be in form of taking a walk or meditating.

You need rest

This has to be the most obvious solution. Your mind would feel refreshed after sleeping and would be ready to tackle the problem.
